At the Dog Lover Show 2023 we introduce a first for us at the SEC, the Dog Lover Show

Grooming Arena! Partnering with the Glasgow Dog Grooming Academy to bring you an our first Grooming Competition, where you can watch groomers compete for the best in their class.

From 9.30 to 5pm daily groomers will be competing in different classes for the best in show on the day. Judged by the professionals winners will be announced daily at 12.30 and 4.30

STUDENTS – 1 CLASS – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

This category is for people who are enrolled in training schools or have recently graduated within

10 weeks of the competition. This category helps students show off their newly learned skills, while competing against others who are on the same skill level. This is beneficial to students as it allows them to get an outside perspective on their peers as well as feedback from fellow world renowned judges/other competitors. It also allows students to test the waters with the competition ring, in a healthy environment. Within this category students are allowed to compete with any breed of dog they choose, they also have freedom on how they choose to style the dog.

 

Any breed / Any size – Allocated 2 hours 30 minutes.

A student should currently be studying towards their dog grooming qualification within a training academy or have graduated from the training academy within 10 weeks of the competition. Within this category all breeds and techniques can be used except colour.

This category is not eligible for best in show.

 

BEGINNERS – 1 CLASS – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

This category is for people who have up to one and a half years of experience. This category helpsbeginners get more involved within the competition side of grooming. This is also beneficial as it allows all beginners to come together and create some networks with their peers, as well as getting an outside perspective on their peers as well as feedback from fellow world renowned judges/other competitors. Within this category beginners are allowed to compete with any breed of dog they choose, they also have freedom on how they choose to style the dog.

 

Any breed / Any size – Allocated 2 hours 30 minutes.

A ‘beginner’ contestant should not have more than 1 and a half years of experience. Within this category all breeds and techniques can be used except colour. The contestant can compete in the ‘beginner’ class in several competitions for 12 months even if they are awarded with a placement. In the second year the contestant must enter the ‘open’ class even if they have not been successful of placing within this category.

This category is not eligible for best in show.

 

INTERMEDIATE – 1 CLASS – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

This category is for people who have more than one and a half years of experience. This category helps intermediates get more involved within the competition side of grooming. Competing as an intermediate is beneficial as it allows competitors within this category network with their peers, as well as getting an outside perspective on their peers as well as feedback from fellow

world renowned judges/other competitors. Within this category beginners are allowed to compete with any breed of dog they choose, they also have freedom on how they choose to style the dog.

 

Any breed / Any size – Allocated 2 hours 30 minutes.

A ‘intermediate’ contestant should not have less than 1 and a half years of experience. Within this category all breeds and techniques can be used except colour. The contestant can compete in the ‘intermediate’ class in several competitions for 12 months even if they are awarded with a placement. In the second year the contestant must enter the ‘open’ class even if they have not been successful of placing within this category.

This category is not eligible for best in show.

 

VETERAN – 1 CLASS – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

This category is for people who have more than seven years of experience, but have never competed at a dog grooming competition. This category if beneficial to the competitors as it allows veterans to meet fellow groomers and show off their skills. feedback from fellow world renowned judges/other competitors. Within this category veterans are allowed to compete with any breed of dog they choose, they also have freedom on how they choose to style the dog.

 

Any Breed / Any size – Time allocated 2 hours.

A ‘veteran’ contestant should not have less than 1 and a half years of experience. Within this category all breeds and techniques can be used except colour. The contestant can compete in the ‘veteran’ class in several competitions for 12 months even if they are awarded with a placement. In the second year the contestant must enter the ‘open’ class even if they have not been successful of placing within this category.

 

POODLE – 2 CLASSES – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

There are two classes within this category, there is open and champ. The open class is open to all, the champ class is for people who have placed check specifications. The category is designer for all competitors to show off various sized poodles in the most recognisable breed standard trims. There are many breed standard trims for poodle which serve a purpose for working dogs rather than for aesthetics. For example, the continental trim, which has been popular since the 1880’s, the theory is poodles used to retrieve ducks in cold water, the hair left on the body should keep the shoulders and the internal organs warm, and the pom poms are situated in the hip bones to keep the kidneys warms. The shaved rear allowed the dogs to swim better.

Standard – Must be over 38cm (15 inches) – Allocated 2 hours 30 minutes

Miniature – Must be under 38cm (15 inches) but not under 28cm (11 inches) – Allocated 2 hours

Toy – Must be under 28cm (11 inches) – Allocated 1 hour 45 minutes

Poodles with a spray up top knot – allocated extra 15 minutes.

Clipper combs are not permitted. Feet and muzzle should be shaved before the start of the competition and must be groomed in an recognised breed standard groom. Poodles with spray up top knots can have an assistant to hold the dog.

 

SALON FREESTYLE – 1 CLASS – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

This category has one class and is open to anyone. Salon free style allows competitors to groom in a commercial style, they are not required to trim in a breed standard trim. Cross breeds such as cockapoos and labradoodles are also allowed to be groomed in this category.

Any breed / Any size

Dogs under 15 inches – Allocated 1 hour 45 minutes.

Dogs over 15 inches – Allocated 2 hours 15 minutes.

This category any breed, including cross breeds and techniques can be used. Clippers are permitted. Colours are not permitted.

This category is not eligible for best in show.

 

PURE BREED SCISSOR – 2 CLASSES – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

There are two classes within this category, there is open and champ. The open class is open to all, the champ class is for people who have placed check specifications. The category is designer for all competitors to show off various pure breeds in breed standard trims. This category is designed for pure breed who are hand scissored such as, bichons, Bedlington terriers.

 

Any breed / Any size

Dogs under 15 inches – Allocated 2 hours.

Dogs over 15 inches – Allocated 2 hours 30 minutes.

This category if for pure breeds only, which should be scissored into the appropriate breed standard trims. Clippers are not permitted. Colours are not permitted.

HANDSTRIP – SILKY – 2 CLASSES – 7-9 per class

Who is this class for?

There are two classes within this category, there is open and champ. The open class is open to all, the champ class is for people who have placed check specifications. The category is designer for all competitors to show off various silky pure breeds in breed standard trims. Properly hand stripping a dog is beneficial to the dogs coat and skin, it reduces skin irritation when handstrip and ensures the coat keeps its proper texture.

Dogs under 15 inches – Allocated 2 hours 30 minutes.

Dogs over 15 inches – Allocated 3 hours.

This category is for hand stripped dogs, which should be trimmed to the recognised breed standard groom. Stripping knifes, chalk, sprays and cream are permitted.

Clippers are only permitted as required due to the dogs specific breed standard trim.

Who is this class for?

The category is designer for all competitors to show off various wiry pure breeds in breed standard trims. Properly hand stripping a dog is beneficial to the dogs coat and skin, it reduces skin irritation when handstrip and ensures the coat keeps its proper texture.

Dogs under 15 inches – Allocated 2 hours 30 minutes.

Dogs over 15 inches – Allocated 3 hours.

This category is for hand stripped dogs, which should be trimmed to the recognised breed standard groom. Stripping knifes, chalk, sprays and cream are permitted.

Clippers are only permitted as required due to the dogs specific breed standard trim.

 

MODEL DOGS – 2 CLASSES

Who is this class for?

This category is a bit of fun and flare to dog styles. This category is demonstrated on specific dog grooming model dogs which is a beneficial tool to practice a wide range of styles. Within the category competitors are allowed to create unusual shapes on the dog, use colour glitter or even trim the dog in the infamous Asian Fusion style. This allows competitors to add some flare into the grooming using pet safe products. Also, the second class within this category is for competitors to create breed specific trim on models dogs.

This category if for model dogs which have already been completed. There will be two different categories within: breed standard and creative/Asian.  These model dogs will be place on display in an allocated area within the ring.  All submissions must not have been used in any other competitions.

This category is not eligible for best in show.

 

RULES & IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Classes

Three placements will be achieved within each category.

Each category will have at least two judges.

Dogs

Dogs must be appropriately washed, dried, and prepped before the competition. This includes;

  • Wash
  • Dry
  • De knotted
  • Pads cleared.
  • Nails trimmed.
  • Ear plucked and cleaned.
  • Anus cleared.
  • Sanitary areas cleared appropriately.

 

  • Poodles feet and muzzles must be shaved before entering competition ring.
  • There will be a 10-minute comfort break for all dogs after one hour during all sessions.
  • All contestants must provide their own dog(s)
  • All dogs must have a minimum of 8 weeks growth on coat.
  • Any patterns or lines should not be visible.
  • There must be enough coat for the contestant to make a difference in the dogs appearance.
  • Contestants competing with dogs who have clear pattern lines or an inappropriate coat growth can result in the competitor being marked down or disqualified.
  • All grooming techniques are allowed and must be appropriate to the dogs coat and grooming requirements.
  • All products used must be dog safe, if any competitor is found to be using unsafe products, this can result in disqualification.

Competitors

  • All competitors must check in at the steward desk, located at The Glasgow Dog Grooming Academy stall, adjacent to the competition ring.
  • Competitors must be in the ring 30 minutes prior to start time for pre-judging with their own dogs and tools.
  • Competitors are not permitted to talk to any other competitors or audience members during the contest. Any competitors found in violation of this rule, will have one waring from a steward, if there is a second incident this will result in disqualification.
  • Competitors are not permitted to use any mobile phones or electronic devices during the competition. Any competitors found in violation of this rule, will have one waring from a steward, if there is a second incident this will result in disqualification.
  • Competitors are not permitted to be ‘rough’ with any dogs. Any competitors found in violation of this rule, will have one waring from a steward, if there is a second incident this will result in disqualification.
  • If competitors are aggressive including foul language towards judges, event staff, or spectators will result in immediate disqualification.
  • If there is any injury to the dog during the competition, depending on severity this can result on immediate disqualification. If there any minor nicks or clipper burns found, the competitor cannot place within the category.
  • All disqualifications are final and will be executed by event management.
  • Competitors should be mindful of other competitors and ensure there are no trip hazards within the aisles.
  • Competitors should remove all hair and tools from table after category time has ended, allowing the judges to approach easily for judgments.
  • A comb should be places on the table for the judge during judging.
  • Competitors may comb the dog before and after the judging has taken place.
  • Competitors should stack their dogs appropriate during judging is taking place. Dogs who are not being judge are not required to be stacked.
  • Any competitors found to be in an inappropriate class will be disqualified (if found after placement, results will be withdrawn)
  • All complaints must be written and submitted to event management before the event has ended.

 

Equipment

  • All competitors must provided their own equipment including tables.
  • No tools or electricity will be provided.
  • All equipment should be properly maintain will no signs of any broken pieces. Any equipment found to in violation to dogs safety will be removed from the competition ring
